If you find yourself hard of hearing it is better to get yourself tested by an audiologist. There are several reasons for hearing loss to occur in individuals, and whatever is the reason, it is best not to ignore it.
What are the signs indicating the need for a hearing test?
Following are some signs that indicate you need to test your hearing.
- Difficulty in keeping up with a conversation in a crowded place
- Raising the TV volume way too high
Reasons for hearing loss in adults
- Listening to loud music quite often
- Injury to the head
- Using power tools to mow the lawn
- Being surrounded by loud noises at the workplace
- Earwax build-up
- Infection in the ear
- Hereditary issue
- Ingestion of certain drugs
Temporary loss of hearing can occur due to earwax build-up
Excessive generation of earwax may lead to an ear block. Cleaning the ear by oneself may unknowingly cause the wax to go deeper, leading to a blockage. It causes a temporary loss of hearing which goes off after an ear wax removal. It is best to get the ear wax removed by your doctor rather than trying to treat it yourself at home. The treatment at the doctor is quick and simple.
Testing your hearing ability at the hearing test
The hearing test procedure lasts for about half an hour and tests for the following aspects:
- Whether you can listen to low-pitched or high-pitched sounds
- Whether you can listen to loud sounds or whispers
- Whether hearing loss is present in the left or right ear or both
Understanding Hearing test Outcomes
The outcome of the hearing test indicates the extent of hearing loss and whether the hearing loss is present in both or one of the ears. Hearing loss can range from mild, moderate, moderate-to-severe, severe, and profound. The range of hearing loss for each type is indicated below:
- Mild - 26 to 40 decibels
- Moderate - 41 to 55 decibels
- Moderate-to-severe -56 to 70decibels
- Severe- 71 to 90 decibels
- Profound – 91 to 100 decibels
Normal hearing loss stands at 25 decibels.
Treatment will be recommended by the audiologist depending upon the extent of your hearing loss. If you suspect a hearing loss, please do go for a hearing test to avoid further deterioration in your hearing.
